Coffee Origins

The words above, by author Karen Blixen, paint a perfect picture of the splendour of coffee groves in bloom. There is a picturesque quality to these evergreen trees with their snow-like blossom and scarlet fruit, which sometimes appear on the tree simultaneously.

The perfume of coffee blossom is reminiscent of jasmine, and so heady that it can be detected 6 kilometres off shore from coastal plantations. The blooms last for two to three days, after which small clusters of green cherries appear. As they ripen, the cherries turn yellow, then red before developing the deep crimson of the ripe fruit.

Coffee only thrives in tropical and sub-tropical climates, where there is well-drained, rich, volcanic soil, an average temperature of between 18-24 degrees and steady rainfall between 1500-2000mm a year. These conditions exist in a number of countries which encircle the globe giving rise to the term “The Coffee Belt”, which runs 25 degrees North and 30 degrees South of the Equator.

Brazil

The king of the coffee world, our Brazilian beans are a rich, sweet and sultry blend. Medium roasted to produce a smooth, rounded and syrupy coffee, with the smooth darkness of South American chocolate.

Jamaica

Does size matter? Not when it comes to producing some of the most sought-after beans in the world. This exclusive, full bodied and beautifully balanced blend is grown in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica. The unique smokey entwine will excite any serious coffee connoisseur.

Guatemala

This small diverse nation produced seven distinct types of Arabica coffee. Ours, a large porous South American bean that provides a fully balanced flavour, and ignites a sweet, smooth tasting blend of aromas.

Costa Rica

Coffee beans from this country have been setting the standard for Central and South American coffees. Our Costa Rican Pura Vida coffee is great for milk based coffees; this single origin roast is rich in acidity and clean in taste.

Colombia

Colombia produces about 12% of the coffee in the world, second only to Brazil, although Vietnam is closing in. Freshly roasted Colombian coffee beans are rich in flavor, heavy bodied, has a bright acidity, and is intensely aromatic. Coffex’s Colombian Condor is a Powerful and seductive, these sexy single origin large beans provide a solid, sweet cup with a chocolate and citrus fruit character, giving a clean, well-presented finish.

Kenya

Closer to the home of coffee, this coffee is grown on top of the world in the rich volcanic soils of the Kenyan highlands, this is a lightly roasted blend that is unique in richness with crisp acidity. Try Kenyan Kahawa. Kahawa is one of the original names for coffee.

Papua New Guinea

The highlands of New Guinea provide us with a perfect balance of passion and excellence. A medium strength blend that is still wild, deeply flavoured and magnificent.
